On August 26, a massive glacier and rock collapse occurred on the northern face of the Langtang Lirung mountain.

This severe geological event triggered catastrophic flash floods and debris flows along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. The resulting surge traveled nearly 100 kilometers downstream, heavily damaging vital infrastructure, schools, and local communities

Families have lost their loved ones and everything they built. Villages, roads, bridges, and hydropower plants were destroyed in minutes. More than 900 people are reported dead and over 4,000 are still missing.

Accelerating global temperatures are destabilizing the frozen water systems of the Himalayas. Thawing permafrost acts as a loss of the natural adhesive holding these mountain slopes together. Scientists have identified 21 critical glacial lakes in Nepal that are at risk of sudden outburst floods. This disaster highlights a stark climate injustice, as Nepal faces these destructive systemic shifts despite generating less than 0.05% of global CO₂ emissions

Nepal now needs an estimated €4–5 billion to rebuild, and more still to protect against the next disaster. With this fundraiser, we hope to appeal to our Plant-for-the-Planet community and collect contributions that we will transfer in full to the official government relief accounts for transparent disaster response

Plant-for-the-Planet has worked in Nepal since 2012. It is one of our most active cluster regions as people are very aware of the threats posed by the climate crisis. In Nepal, we run Academies for children, help restore forests, and stand with local communities.
